For the long journey from Spain to the New World, Pineda needed to be prepared.
Francisco de Garay commisioned the voyage, having been on Colombus' second voyage, he had quite a bit of experience on the high seas.
Pineda also set off with 270 men, four ships, and plenty of food for the nine month trip ahead.
